Houkago no Pleiades is an early 2015 mahou shoujo anime centered around a group of middleschoolers. The girls are part of a club (disguised as a cosplay club) and are tasked with collected fragments of their alien friend's shattered spaceship. The anime was sponsored and produced by the Japanese car company Subaru, hence the lead character being named the same. This anime is a bit unique from most mahou shoujo anime as it focuses it's settings and backgrounds around outer space. Multiple scenes are depicted with the girl's floating among the stars or traveling at light speed through the cosmos.
Ringo's Thoughts:
I first saw this anime as a promotional short series released by Subaru (the company) in an attempt to advertise their products to a wider audience (aka otaku apparently). The mini series were well animated and the artwork was captivating. So when an official anime series was announced I was pretty excited. However the TV series contained little new content throughout the first couple episodes and the main girl Subaru was strikingly boring. She was cute, energetic, caring, and clumsy...aka pretty dang typical. Not to mention several episodes were centered around her hesitation in regards to her friendships and resolve. I honestly hate when series do this, but I hate when a character's whole personality becomes engulfed in a vortex of worried looks and childish hesitation even more. All in all, I liked the series mostly because of the animation because upon reflection I realize I didn't pay too much attention to the cast.
