About/Thoughts:Himouto is about a girl with two different lives. The life she lives as the 'perfect' highschool girl (good grades, athletic, beautiful and beloved by all), and then the life she lives at home as the whiny and utterly lazy otaku younger sister of her appointed caretaker (aka elder brother).
Himouto is one of the best anime I've watched in a while. I loved every bit of it though I do still have a couple humble critiques. Despite being named after the show and vice-versa, there were many a time when the show seemed to focus more on the brother than Umaru. Of course it mostly had to do with his relationship with her, and that's not to say I dislike the elder brother...I suppose I was just greedy for more Umaru craziness.
Since I'm also a hopelessly lazy otaku, I spend all my free time in my room like Umaru, and I'm an irresponsible younger sister with an older brother, this anime really stuck with me, since I could relate to Umaru.
Now...getting a bit more philosophical here.....
I feel the reason why this anime was such a great success, is because it represents not just general otaku, but also female otaku as well. Believe it or not, being an otaku is normally looked down upon in Japan, despite the massive contribution the anime industry makes to the country's economy. Adding to that mind-frame is the assumption that all otaku are creepy middle-aged men. As such, being a young female otaku can probably be pretty difficult in Japan. This is where this anime comes in. I have no doubt in my mind that there are real girls in the exact same situation Umaru is in. Meaning they're in a situation where they have to put up a 'normal' front with their friends and can only be their true otaku selves in the privacy of their own homes. Taking all this into consideration, it's pretty easy to see how this anime might appeal to young female anime lovers right? Right.
